welcome to my shrine for my favorite twdg character! use the buttons on the bottom to navigate through the shrine.
Doug is the dorky, easy-going guy who was introduced in the first episode, "A New Day." you meet him at the Everett Pharmacy, where he was alongside Carley, who he (somehow) saved.
he is described as being likable, resourceful, and "painfully logical in a way only IT guys can be".
Doug isn't much of a fighter, and he is a pretty passive person. he maintains good/neutral relationships with the other characters because of that.
he manages to stay out of conflict for the most part, but occasionally he can be a little passive aggressive. (like making sly remarks when he doesnt get fed in episode 2 lol)
in episode 3, Doug begins to express feeling "worthless" because his skills were not useful to the group.
i think this makes his determinant death a lot sadder, because afterwards many characters expressed their fondess for him.
there's not much known about doug prior to the apocalypse. Doug mentions that he moved to Macon to live with his uncle due to their similar jobs.
why you should save Doug! or why you should at least like him D:
as i talked about in the "Why" section, there really isnt an actual reason to pick him over Carley (but honestly, i think the same could be said for Carley. it's complicated and requires a lot of explaining that i just dont feel like doing here.)
but many people don't see how awesome Doug is. so here's my (small) list of reasons to why you should save Doug! at least once.
Doug is a pretty nice guy, and he won't start any fights. you wont find Doug instigating or causing any conflict.
plus, you'll also find Doug going out of his way to make sure Clementine was doing ok. he asks about her after she literally almost ate human meat, hoping she didn't see anything that happened at the dairy.
Doug will secure the motel with an alarm system! by his own admission, Doug isn't very good with guns. but he is a very inventive and resourceful guy!
the other characters are a little skeptical about his makeshift alarms at first, but they proved to be really useful. especially during the bandit raid.
Doug is good comic relief and he manages to stay hopeful. even when he's feeling "useless", he believes that the group can protect themselves.
there's also that scene where he eats all the biscuits, and i think that's pretty funny.
umm. thats all. for now. trust me guys doug is great....
my thoughts on Doug as a character.
in my first playthrough, i didnt really want to save Carley or Doug. i didn't feel attatched to either of them. i only ended up saving Doug because i forced my younger brother make the choice for me.
his reasoning for saving Doug is that Doug didnt know about Lee's past, so it was easier for Lee to keep it a secret.
looking back, i still think that is a valid reason for saving Doug. hell, it's probably the only good reason for saving him.
although i am Doug's #1 biggest fan, i can agree with the fact that he adds very little to the story.
Carley gets the chance of having a potential romance and the option to have Lee confess his past to the group. other than a short moment of problem-solving with Lee, Doug doesn't really get anything like that.
game designers Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin state that they didn't see a difference between Carley and Doug. they just saw two totally different, but equally loved friends of the player.
clearly, the love was not very equal. Telltale was actually surprised that Carley was the more popular choice.
upon looking back at the two character's first impressions, they realized exactly why Doug wasn't popular.
The first interactions with Carley are built on trust. Doug's interactions are esstentially built on lying to him, ultimately making it so you couldn't form a bond with him.
i really reccommend checking out the panel that talks about this. you'll learn a lot about the game's design through this panel.
"When we break it down like that, it seems clear that there are issues beyond 'girl with gun vs. dorky dude.'"
i have written literal fan-fiction about how the interactions with Doug could've been better.
i think i'm too embarassed to share any of it right now.. but basically that's me saying that I could be a better writer than anyone at Telltale.
sorry for the rambling. Heres more rambling
despite the fact Doug does quite literally nothing, he's my favorite character in the whole franchise. i think you know this by now. I Shouldnt have to tell you.
he somehow manages to be really endearing and relatable to me. especially how he was in episode 3. like me too doug.. me too ....
my favorite Doug moments are when he gets visibly excited over something he knows about. like chalk, or flashlights, or when he went to the St. Johns' dairy because he was excited to see how their electric fence worked.
Off topic, but in episode 3 when Doug started to speak up in the argument with Lilly and Ben, i totally thought it was him who caused the raid.
i haven't seen anyone else say this, but i think its intentional. i mean, you know that Doug doesn't participate in fights, and then he suddenly gets all defensive. i think it's only rational to assume that Doug might've at least helped Ben.
am i crazy for thinking this... i dont know
Anyway...

here's some Doug fun facts

Doug had a cameo apperance in Poker Night 2!
Doug is modeled after a very real guy- Doug Tabacco! he was an IT guy/web developer for Telltale.
according to older player choice stats, only 25% of players saved Doug. current stats say 51% on. pretty interesting
unused lines show that lee was supposed to have a different puzzle to do with Doug.
apparently, you were supposed to knock down a powerline with him. and use him as bait.
i would also like to note that his voice sounds TOTALLY different in these lines. which is odd. possible different voice actor? i don't know
it was mentioned that Doug spent time in Belgium. you find this out from Katjaa, who is Belgian.
here's a clip of this conversation.
sorry about the audio
there is a pretty interesting scrapped scene with Doug:
if you didn't save him at the pharmacy, Lee could've had a nightmare about him
the same also applies to not saving Carley. but this is the Doug shrine. :p
you can click some images to open them in a new tab
doug in the s4 prologue. i've always liked the way he was drawn here
both of his deaths are featured too
concept art. i think hes cute
the achivements featuring Dough Boy.
doug by a campfire in the s1 debut trailer. the trailer itself is pretty interesting.
it shows a bunch of scenes that never happened in the game, including that campfire. i know it's probably just promo stuff, but its still cool.
this screenshot is from the "Saving Doug" panel. Dorky Guy. it's nothing remarkable, it just made me laugh.
this panel is Also super cool. i talk more about it on another section on this shrine. ;)
